5.0 out of 5 stars Produces Delicious Rice - White or Brown - And Quckly, December 22, 2008

I am very satisfied with this rice cooker. I use it to cook white or brown rice, the brown being my favorite. The brown rice takes a little longer to cook because you have to double the amount of water. For example, if you use one cup of white rice, you use one cup of water. With the brown rice, you use two cups of water for one cup of brown rice. Make sure to rinse the rice several times before placing it in the cooker. Rinse until the water is relatively clear. This step will keep the rice from being sticky after it cooks. Clean up was a breeze.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is NOT a steamer, as well as a rice cooker, January 14, 2009

Both the name and product description for this item are incorrect. This is a rice cooker, but it is not also a steamer. I contacted customer service about the incorrect information on this page, but their only response was "if you don't like it, you can send it back." Do not buy this product if you want a rice cooker that can also be used as a steamer.

5.0 out of 5 stars great deal, September 28, 2008
I HAD HEARD ABOUT RICE COOKERS AND WONDERED WHY I NEEDED ONE I COULD COOK RICE ON THE STOVE. WHY HAD I WAITED? THIS MODEL WAS JUST THE RIGHT SIZE AND HAD FEATURES OF THE MORE EXPENSIVE ONES. NOT TOO LARGE AND NOT TOO SMALL, THE LID LOCKS NOT JUST RESTS ON TOP, IT CATCHES THE WATER FROM THE CONDENSATION WHEN YOU OPEN THE LID, IT SWITCHES TO KEEP WARM WHEN THE RICE IS DONE (WHICH IT SOMEHOW KNOWS)IT HAS THIS PADLE TO SERVE THE RICE, AND THE PRICE IS RIGHT! NOW, NO MORE BOIL OVERS TO CLEAN UP AND FRESH RICE IN ABOUT 15 MINUTES!

Cuisinart CRC-400 4-Cup Rice Cooker

Product Description

Cuisinart Rice Cooker has a brushed stainless housing and embossed Cuisinart logo. Traditional Lever control with warm and cook settings

Amazon.com Review

Healthy cooking and sleek modern design meld in this rice cooker from Cuisinart. A smaller version of the eight-cup cooker, this one also features a handsome brushed stainless-steel exterior, a square shape with rounded corners, chrome-plated handles, and a glass lid with a stainless rim, chrome knob, and steam vent hole. Inside you'll find a high-quality stainless-steel steaming basket and a nonstick cooking bowl that produces 4 to 7 cups of rice. The cooker also steams vegetables and thin cuts of meat, creating a complete, fat-free meal with little effort. Besides various types of rice, the cooker cooks couscous, polenta, oatmeal, boiled eggs, shrimp, and much more. An included booklet presents gourmet recipes for such mouth-watering meals as Creamy Parmesan Risotto with Asparagus, and Teriyaki Steamed Chicken with Cranberry Wild Rice.

One lever is all that's required to flip the machine on. Two different colored LED lights illuminate, one during the cooking phase, and the other when the machine automatically switches to warm when cooking is done. Included with the machine are a textured plastic paddle for stirring and serving, and a plastic measuring cup calibrated specifically for rice. All the unit's removable parts are dishwasher-safe. The cooker measures 7-3/4 by 7-3/4 by 9 inches, and is covered by a three-year warranty. --Ann Bieri

5.0 out of 5 stars Love my rice cooker!, September 6, 2004

This review is from: Cuisinart CRC-400 4-Cup Rice Cooker (Kitchen)
This rice cooker is a great addition to any kitchen. I love the steamer basket addition which allows me to cook additional food items at the same time as my rice. The steamer basket is great for hard and soft boiled eggs. When using this cooker, make sure that you go by the directions on the rice itself, not by the instructions in the manual (rice to water ratio). Also, the rice does have a tendency to boil over. I usually put a little butter in with the rice to prevent this from happening. I'm very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment, February 13, 2006
This review is from: Cuisinart CRC-400 4-Cup Rice Cooker (Kitchen)
It's easy to clean and sure looks great on your countertop!

Positive feedback stops here.

I made a mess out of cooking rice (all the negative reviews are true) until I figured that I should use slightly less water than the recommended quantity. After that, I spent 1 year using it nonstop (we eat rice every day).

365 days later, the non-stick bowl is BADLY chipped, like little bubbles that burst on the bottom and left pinhead-sized chips. I swear that I never used anything else than the included plastic scoop (and sponge for cleaning) and never ever scratched it, so I'm 100% sure the non-stick coating quality is to blame.

Add to that that non-stick coating is toxic*, this baby is out of my kitchen as soon as I can afford a Zojirushi. They're not as elegants, but they last forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars The instructions are wrong, January 25, 2008

(REAL NAME)
After purchasing this unit, I too had spill over at very low water rice levels. I realized that this is the same problem one would get, using even medium heat to cook grits, or rice in a regular pot.......

(If you leave the top of the pot down tight.)

There is no way, because of the high heat setting of this unit, that the glass lid supplied can be used to completely cover the cooking pot, even though the instruction book indicates so.. The hole would have to be much larger to allow steam to escape.

The temperature setting of the heating dictates the designer set it high to allow the use of the steaming attachment, using a high boiling point

The steam will push the oxygen mols from the pot causing a very low barometric air pressure.

With this the bubbles generated by the boiling rice water will have almost no air pressure to keep them low or at minimum.{ they expand greaty), Thus foaming out the sides of the pot.

Even... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A dieter's best friend, June 28, 2007

This review is from: Progressive International Microwavable Mini Steamer (Kitchen)
I love, love, love this little contraption. I have a Black and Decker steamer, which works well too, but I can't stand the cleanup on those things. You have to take it apart, try and get all excess material out of the grid, try to wash the base without immersing the electrical cord...even with the metal in-basket steamers you come across the same messy cleanup involving two or three pieces and/or pots and pans. Which, I suppose, wouldn't be a problem for someone wanting to make several servings of steamed veggies, but when it's just you...you don't want the hassle. With this little steamer (which is about the same size as most cereal bowls) I can make individual portions of veggies in a matter of minutes in the microwave. Which is good because I like to shake it up a bit on my seasonings and this gives me the flexibility of making different flavors each time. I just sprinkle on the toppings before zapping the items. Cleanup is where it really, really shines. The slits in the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect for using at work, January 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Progressive International Microwavable Mini Steamer (Kitchen)
I bought this for using at work to have a healthier
alternative to the cafeteria. It does the job and makes
the right amount of steamed vegetables for a single serving.
I'd estimate it takes at least about 1 1/2 cups raw veggies by
volume if not a little more. I followed the directions and
put inside the measured amount of recommended water, but now
I just turn on the faucet and put in what looks about the same
as the measured amount. I also reduce the power on the microwave to a medium high and follow the recommended minutes for the different veggies. I wrote on the bottom with a permanent ink pen the recommended times and water amount as a reminder for myself. After microwaving the directions say to keep the steamer closed for a few minutes. So far I've steamed broccoli/cauliflower/carrots and green beans in it with perfect results. Made in China

This is a great product, especially for a smaller family. I would have given it 5 stars but the directions are a little lacking. It has to have a fair amount of water in it (not just a couple of tablespoons) but it works very well.
